women_rhode_islandDid you know Ida Lewis, light house keeper, was only 16 when she saved four boys from drowning in Newport Harbor?  Or that Sarah Doyle spent her adult life working towards girl’s and women’s education in Rhode Island?

Starting with Ann Hutchinson, co-founder of Rhode Island, and ending with Elizabeth Beisel, Olympic swimmer, Women of the Ocean State, 25 Rhode Island Women You Should Know, is full of interesting biographies of notable Rhode Island Women.

Women of the Ocean State is written for ages 9-12. But don’t let that keep you from reading it yourself. Adults will also enjoy learning more about notable women of our state. Each of the 25 biographies is a quick read and includes a timeline, tidbits about the subject, and a photograph or drawing. There is also a glossary included with each biography and additional links for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge.

Four of the fourteen contributing authors are from Rhode Island;  Linda Crotta Brennan, award winning author of over 20 books for young children, Cheryl Kirk Noll, writer, illustrator and art instructor at RISD-CE, Sally P. Riley, author and Marcia M. Fowler, author. All four authors worked together to help create this book published by Apprentice Shop Books.

Marcia Fowler, mom, writer and teacher, is currently collecting  essays for an anthology titled, Moms in America.
