Exciting things planned at Roger Williams Park Zoo! A New Zoo Experience for Children Opening Summer 2012

[ 1 ] March 19, 2012 |

Hasbro’s “Our Big Backyard” is an interactive exhibit opening at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Summer 2012. Families will have fun experiencing the natural wonders of the New England region through exhibits and activities designed to stimulate exploration and nature-play that engages interaction across generations.  It will include both New England region animal exhibits and themed, interactive play areas. Not only will it be great fun, but for those children who don’t ordinarily have the chance to experience unstructured nature-play, this will provide an important learning opportunity that can foster a life-long appreciation for nature and wildlife, and their conservation.

Features:

  • Our House: A space for interactive story time, birthday parties, up close animal encounters, as well as the Nature Swap, a special place where children can trade items that they’ve collected when out exploring nature.
  • The Backyard: A play space with three different activity zones, the Drip Drop Water Garden, Creativity Corner, and the Sticks and Stones Building Zone, all of which encourage children into free ended play.
  • CVS Caremark All Kids Can Tree House: A fully accessible tree house with activities  to engage all the senses. Packed with things to touch, hear, smell, and see, there will always be something new to discover and experience together!
  • Beyond the Fence (Coming in 2014): This will open with a New England animals exhibit, featuring local wildlife such as river otters, wild turkeys, great horned owls, lynx, and porcupine.

  1. I am so excited for this new spot at the zoo!! I have a feeling we’re going to be spending a LOT of time there.

If anyone’s interested in becoming a volunteer in the nature play areas, I believe RWP Zoo is now accepting applications…
