Meet Fritz LanzNeighborhood: Hill and Harbor in East Greenwich

Kidoinfo:
Where were you born?
FL: I was born in Hartford, Connecticut, home of the once mighty Whalers (and I’m proud of the fact that I can still bust out their theme — “Brass Bonanza” – at a moment’s notice).

Kidoinfo: How long have you lived in Rhode Island?
FL: I have lived in Rhode Island since 1997 when fate brought me to Block Island. I was all set to leave a year later for the bright lights of Brooklyn, when I crossed paths with a certain preschool teacher. Good-bye Williamsburg, hello Providence!

Kidoinfo: What is your current state of mind?
FL: I’m feeling upbeat and hopeful, and thinking of adventures near and far (especially far).

Kidoinfo:
Who’s in your family?
FL: My family consists of my wife, Kateri, my three kids, Ivy (7), Stella (5), and Ezra (10 months), and our cat, Aedan.

Kidoinfo: What trait do you most admire about your family?
FL: The ability to sleep well in a tent for weeks on end.

Kidoinfo: What is your favorite thing to do?
FL: Ah, life is grand when I’m outside hiking, running, biking, swimming, sailing, etc. It’s also pretty good when eating meals in our backyard or at the beach while drinking wine and eating cheese my brother illegally sent to us from France.

Kidoinfo: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
FL: Four-way tie: My house, EG Free Library, the beach, and somewhere on Rhode Island’s North-South Trail.

Kidoinfo: Where would you most like to live?
FL: Patagonia

Kidoinfo: What do you like to do when you are not with your kids?
FL: 1) Spend time with Kateri; 2) Exercise; 3) Both at the same time, if possible.

Kidoinfo: What is the most overrated thing about parenthood?
FL: The first six months.

Kidoinfo: What is your most treasured possession?
FL: My library card.

Kidoinfo: What superpower would you most like to have?
FL: The ability to fly or to be really good at basketball.

Kidoinfo: Who is your favorite fictional mother or father?
FL: Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Kidoinfo: What do you do when you’re not with your kids?
FL: I work as a mathematics teacher. I’m passionate about the outdoors. Currently we are hiking the North-South Trail in Rhode Island as a fundraiser for Longitude, a nonprofit started by my friends that assists developing countries by providing them with resources, volunteers, and support services.

I like also like to cook, bake bread, make cheese (someday I will have my own aging cave), read travel guides for countries we would go to if we had the money, and obsessively follow my globe-trotting brother on youtube (he plays with Sufjan Stevens, The National, amongst others).

Kidoinfo: What are you going to do now that you have answered
these questions?
FL: Make some tea, brush my teeth, iron a shirt, and climb into bed.
