Providence PlayCorps – a summer initiative to activate the city’s parks with free play and creative exploration in conjunction with the free federal summer meals program – celebrates its final week of the season with imaginative activities daily from Monday, August 17 to Friday, August 21.

PlayCorps1PlayCorps is a nationally recognized collaboration of the Partnership for Providence Parks, Providence Children’s Museum and the City of Providence’s Department of Parks and Recreation and Healthy Communities Office, with funding from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and a Health Equity Zone grant through the Rhode Island Department of Health.  On weekdays since July 6, teams of play facilitators have coordinated playful activities at seven parks in neighborhoods across Providence: Billy Taylor Park (Mount Hope), Bucklin Park (West End), Father Lennon/Camden Street Park (Smith Hill), General Street Park (Wanskuck), Harriet and Sayles Park (South Side), Wallace Street Park (Silver Lake)and Zuccolo/Pastore Park (Federal Hill), and as well as at 10 other city parks visited by the PlayCorps PlayMobile.

To celebrate the successful second summer of PlayCorps, the public is invited to join playful activities at each of these parks the week of August 17 from 11 AM to 2 PM.

At Harriet and Sayles Park, the children and PlayCorps team are working on a giant puzzle, a handprint mural, maracas and decorations all week in preparation for a culminating carnival complete with obstacle course relay races, face painting and a dance party and parade on Friday.

At Wallace Street Park, kids will celebrate with a circus parade and a “fashion show” on Monday, displaying fashions they created from cardboard, fabric and other materials.  Wednesday is “bug day”; on Thursday afternoon, it’s a “play blitz,” including a wild waterslide; and on Friday PlayCorps kids will run through an obstacle course with rainbow ribbon finish line to celebrate an amazing summer.

At Father Lennon/Camden Avenue Park, kids will construct a giant waterslide on Wednesday, and make banners and noisemakers for a big parade on Friday.  At Bucklin Park, it’s the PlayCorps Olympics on Thursday and Friday.

On Tuesday, August 18, the PlayCorps PlayMobile will coordinate mural making, a talent show and closing ceremony at Donigian Park.  The PlayMobile also travels to Fargnoli Park on Wednesday, Billy Taylor Park on Thursday and Father Lennon/Camden Avenue Park on Friday.

All PlayCorps closing activities are free and open to the public.  For more information about PlayCorps, visit www.PlayCorps.org and follow PlayCorps on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/provplaycorps).
