I agree counselors need to be trained and equipped to deal with the emotional development of children. I hope as parents talk about this, camps will make an effort to address this. The head counselor admitted to me that my daughter's experience and reaction was not all that unusual, as the camp is very large and that some kids get lost in the shuffle and become overwhelmed. The head counselor also said that one source of stress for my daughter was the atmosphere in my daughter's cabin. Apparently, some of the 12-year old girls wanted to talk about boys and sex, and the counselors in her cabin made no attempt to keep the conversation age appropriate. There is little evidence that the administrators of the camp look to hire counselors who are well-qualified to supervise young children or want to serve as positive role models. Camp Fuller is certainly inexpensive, but it is also poorly supervised and overcrowded. Obviously, we won't be sending my daughter back. And we know of other parents who decided not to send their children back to Camp Fuller after similar experiences. One daughter could not even get into a sailing session all week because they were full. They had to clean the bathrooms - even hair out of the shower drains. Older campers making out at the evening bonfire. Waterskiing session was a rip off - only one try per day.
