I haven't been this excited about a board book since---ever. Hippopposites is the international literary debut of French designer Janik Coat, and brings heretofore unseen sophistication and graphic punch to that esteemed genre: opposites books.

Using one red, square-ish, cankled hippo to illustrate pair after pair of opposites, Coat has created a book that's enchanting for the eyes and fun to read.

"A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down" was the mantra of Mary Poppins. When children are engaged in activities that are fun and absorbing, not only are they learning new skills without pain and frustration but they are also building the confidence that will help them tackle problems in school and beyond.

The Saylesville Meetinghouse in Lincoln, Rhode Island is very interested in facilitating this process. Once a month they offer a crafting workshop that is perfect for families with young children. These simple crafts are enjoyable for adults as well. The workshops are free and they try to use recyclable materials whenever possible. Joanne Griffin (crafter extraordinaire) loves to see the surprise on the children's faces when they realize beautiful things can be made from something they would normally put in the trash.

When I started listing my family’s favorite children’s books I realized some authors kept reappearing so I decided to compile a list of the authors and illustrators we adore.

Families are reading books increasingly on electronic devices these days. Although a kindle may be convenient for traveling, I prefer reading books made from paper. I love how they visually look and feel and how they feel part of a family written or illustrated with a distinctive style or personality because of size, color, artwork and paper weight. That said, check out the author websites after reading their stories for a peak into their creative minds, learn interesting facts about the authors and their books and glimpse at upcoming projects.

This awe-inspiring novel—alternating pages with only words with picture-only pages—tells the story of a young boy named Ben in 1977 and a young deaf girl, Rose living in 1927. Both flee to New York City in search of answers and a sense of belonging.
It would be dreadful to run out of this deadpan goodness any time soon. We dole it out slowly. Avoiding a binge doesn't take much willpower, because they're practically impossible to find. Even Amazon doesn't have many in stock: Andy Stanton's series of books about the daft, cruel Mr. Gum, who hates "children, animals, fun, and corn on the cob." (On the other hand, it's not all hate—Mr. Gum loves the BBC television show "Bag of Sticks," which features a 30-minute shot of sticks. In a bag.) The books also feature a fairy (she's rough), a dog named Jake (he's kind and oblivious), and rhymes, which make us choke and cry (in a good way).
