Although theses acts should not be rewarded, I would like to see our school administration and staff value recess as necessary for healthy child development and find alternative ways to discipline kids or hold them accountable for their actions, or lack of action, in some instances.

I haven't been this excited about a board book since---ever. Hippopposites is the international literary debut of French designer Janik Coat, and brings heretofore unseen sophistication and graphic punch to that esteemed genre: opposites books.

Using one red, square-ish, cankled hippo to illustrate pair after pair of opposites, Coat has created a book that's enchanting for the eyes and fun to read.

As the springtime sun is shining, warming up the ground and helping plant life bloom all around us, it is so much fun to connect with the season by planting something of your own and watching it grow!

Families with the space and the inclination to go big may enjoy planning and planting a vegetable garden together. Each family member can choose what they’d like to plant, and everyone works together on garden design, construction, planting and caring for the young plants.

But, perhaps you don’t feel very knowledgeable, or have the space for a large-scale garden….consider gardening anyway!

Integrating digital media into the classroom requires thoughtful consideration and training to make it an effective, inspiring, and beneficial learning opportunity for our students. I applaud Highlander Institute for taking the lead in hosting this event - open to anyone interested in learning more about the concept including teachers, administrators, parents, etc. (7 credit hours are available for the day conference.)

Highlander Institute, a regional provider of high quality professional development in education, presents the Blended Learning & Technology Conference on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm.

We recently spent our April Vacation in Toronto attending the TIFF Kids International Film Festival.

TIFF Kids offers children and youth the opportunity to learn about cultural perspectives from around the world through the power of the moving image. More than just a day at the movies, TIFF Kids includes two public weekends for ages three and up and a two week long School Program for students in elementary schools. Featuring the best of Canadian and international cinema for children and youth, TIFF Kids offers a compelling selection of features and shorts on diverse subjects in a variety of genres and styles. It provides a rare opportunity to watch films that kids around the world are lining up to see and that in many cases may not be available again in Toronto.

Whether it's a fun summer camp at a farm or increasing childcare, now's the time to make plans for long days of no school.

Have you finalized what you will do with the kids this summer or are you still making plans?

Summer options for children include: go to summer camp; continue the year-round childcare/daycare they already have; hire a nanny, au pair or babysitter; join a swim club with a babysitter; spend time with grandparents; or swap childcare with friends.

Which one of these ideas or combination works best for your family will depend on your child’s personality, your work schedule, and your budget. Here is a list of helpful suggestions to make this process a bit easier:
