“A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down” was the mantra of Mary Poppins. When children are engaged in activities that are fun and absorbing, not only are they learning new skills without pain and frustration but they are also building the confidence that will help them tackle problems in school and beyond.

The Saylesville Meetinghouse in Lincoln, Rhode Island is very interested in facilitating this process. Once a month they offer a crafting workshop that is perfect for families with young children. These simple crafts are enjoyable for adults as well. The workshops are free and they try to use recyclable materials whenever possible. Joanne Griffin (crafter extraordinaire) loves to see the surprise on the children’s faces when they realize beautiful things can be made from something they would normally put in the trash.

In addition, campers participate in workshops on topics such as media literacy, gender issues, body image, self-defense and screen printing. During the camp, girls will have the opportunity to work with professional female musicians who serve as both instructors and mentors. I am thrilled to be partnering with Edible Rhody to create Edible Rhody Kids starting with Edible Rhody’s spring 2012 issue. Each season, we will feature an article, photos and a recipe geared to kids and families, with an emphasis on fun, food related, hands-on activities for children.

There is an obvious synergy between the Edible Rhody and Kidoinfo. Edible Rhody is the voice of local food, agriculture and dining, with a dedicated audience of families with children—and my mission for Kidoinfo has been to become the trusted hub for everything about kids in Rhode Island.
