V snuck into this recipe because U decided to go and be something else mid way through the recipe writing. And before I tell you anything about Umeboshi plums or Vidalia Onions, I need to say that my daughter ate 3 pieces of this meatloaf. This is noteworthy. She prefers carbs in all forms!

Umeboshi plums are a hidden secret in the Asian section of the grocery store. These little plums are pickled and very salty and said to aide digestion and appetite. When I was pregnant it was suggested I eat one to help with nausea and I could have laughed, if I wasn’t so sick! Just the thought made me more nauseous, but now I’m loving them. A little goes a long way with these, I buy the paste and just add a tiny bit to dressings and sauces instead of salt.

We have decided to celebrate the magic of snow (and lack of the white stuff in the northeast) by hosting a Snow Party - complete with stories, crafts, science experiments and snacks. Followed by a trip outdoors in real snow if the temperatures drop and the rain changes to snow.

Read "Snowflake Bentley" (Caldecott Medal Book) by Jacqueline Briggs, illustrated by Martin Mary Azarian. This is the true story of Wilson Bentley, a farmer born in 1865 in Jericho, Vermont, a small town between Lake Champlain and Mount Mansfield. The story shows Bentley’s fascination, determination, and success in learning how to photograph snowflakes after his mother gave him a microscope when he was fifteen. Beautiful, bold woodcut illustrations.

My son and I entered the first (and hopefully annual) Summit Fall Cook-Off at Seven Stars in November. The only rule was the recipe needed apples as a prominent ingredient. Although my son and I usually do not cook together the event inspired us. We perused a number of recipes including soups, pizza, pasta, and baked apples. We chose recipes new to us (Sweet Potato Apple soup and Apple Pecan muffins) with no time to experiment or adjust ingredients before the event. If we make the soup again, we'll add more spice. We loved the muffins and although they did not win a prize they received Honorable Mention and we have made them a number times since.

The totally fun blog They Draw & Cook is now a book!

If you like to draw and cook, you are probably familiar with this international site of cookies, carrots, and quirk. Much snugglier than a screen, the sturdy book version features illustrated recipes (107 of them) from cook-artists who live all over the world. As on the blog, each cook-artist has a distinct style---some pages look like favorite children's book illustrations, others more like beautifully designed packaging; some are silly, some are graceful, others are bizarre---to clue you in to the mood of the dish.

Vinegar easily makes my “what would you bring to a desert island’ list – the practical version anyway. At less than four dollars for a gallon jug, white distilled vinegar offers a myriad of uses that can easily replace costly and harsh pesticides and chemicals.

Vinegar can be found throughout my home whether in its original jug in the basement, the filled spray bottle in the cupboard or the dainty cruet on the kitchen counter. Even more than its low-cost, I like the idea of cleaning with something that has no warning-paragraph. There is no fear from vinegar accidently getting sprayed on foods or tooth brushes, in fact, you can spray it on foods and toothbrushes.

Ever wondered what’s at the bottom of your child’s backpack? Two-time Grammy award-winning artist Bill Harley did some digging, and he put the answer into song. We love Harley’s humorous spin on growing up, going to school and family life. Families can hear him sing and tell stories at a benefit concert for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank on Saturday, December 10th at the Lincoln School in Providence. Two performances are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

I have 4 tickets to give away for this concert! Please share your child's favorite Bill Harley song or story in the comments below and I will randomly pick one winner by Friday, December 2, 2011 at Noon, EST.

“You coming for tacos tonight?” I text to my neighbor.

“You bet,” she texts back.

An hour later she is in our living room playing LEGOS with my kids while I spoon taco fixings into bowls and lay them out on the table.

Our dinners together began about three years ago when I was a full-time at-home parent of a toddler and a preschooler. It was right about this time of year, as we turned the clocks back and began winding our way into the long, dark nights of winter, that I felt myself on the fast track to a major mama meltdown.
