Date night out (with my son)

Date night out (with my son)

[ 1 ] 10.16.2011 |

If you have more than one child, you already know that spending time with just one of them—without other siblings underfoot and vying for our attention—is rare.

Not as often as I would like, but since my boys were toddlers, I have made an effort to spend some one-on-one time with each of them. Since my boys are twins—and have always been on the same nap, playdate and now after-school schedule—creating one-on-one time with each one I thought was important to their development and confidence. Time away from a sibling’s shadow, allows each of them space to express and explore their own opinions and interests. My husband and I have tried to make one-on-one time a special outing or activity but sometimes it’s as simple as grocery shopping with a treat or curling up reading together when no one else is home.

Baby spinach is called leaves in my house. The kids love to munch these little leaves and feel like bunnies! Whatever works. Finger foods are a delight to the kiddos. When it comes to vegetables they just prefer to use their fingers. You can pack a small container of baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices [...]

Family Matters: Apple Picking, Recipes + More

Apple picking is one of our favorite fall traditions. We spend time together outdoors as a family, support local farmers, and learn about how and where real apples grow.

We often combine our trip with a tailgate picnic lunch at the orchard or snack at a nearby café. Once home from apple picking, we sort our bounty; setting aside smaller apples for the lunch box and selecting larger or slightly bruised apples for cooking.

Children can do something about “Nothing”

Children can do something about “Nothing”

Students make a difference in their own social circles

Even the youngest child can appreciate the importance of good food on the table. The idea of having nothing to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner is almost impossible to imagine. For the 60,000 Rhode Islanders who rely on food supplied by the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, however, the reality of nothing on the table is all too real.

That’s the idea behind the Food Bank’s “Nothing” campaign, which offers both real and virtual cans of Nothing for $2.99. Each can you purchase buys 10 pounds of food for Rhode Island’s hungry. More than 30 grocers and retail stores around the state are helping to sell the real-life cans in September. For a complete list of participating stores, visit www.Nothing.org. Or you can buy a virtual can – with your very own name placed on the can – at www.NothingStore.org.
