In 2012, the age of smart phones, tablets, readers and mp3 players – Providence Community Library wants you remind you that the ultimate hand-held device is your library card and it’s free!

During the week of February 20th, PCL will be holding a library card drive to increase patronage as much as possible! Patrons who owe late fees can have their fines wiped away by bringing in a canned good and new patrons will be able to enjoy the benefits of owning a PCL library card – the ability to check out (for free) books, movies, music from any library in the state, free computer and internet access, and so much more!

Introducing the New Children’s Discovery Library at Providence Public Library: The Story Starts Here!

The Providence Public Library children’s room has transformed into the Children’s Discovery Library – The Story Starts Here! The new Children’s Discovery Library officially opens on Saturday, January 28 at 12:30 pm with a ribbon cutting, special guests and activities. Parents and children will have the opportunity to learn about and explore the new Children’s Discovery Library space, free and open to public. Activities include face painting, refreshments and prize drawings.

To create Rhode Island’s latest family learning destination, Providence Public Library (PPL) contracted Providence Children’s Museum, which has earned both a national reputation for the excellence of its exhibits and the popular acclaim of generations of southern New England’s children and caregivers. The artful re-imagining and design of PPL’s children’s library has resulted in a captivating and enriching environment for early learners. We love collaborations and are excited to see and play in this new space!

Afterschool Special: Make Comics! Workshops

Make Comics! is run by the Providence Comics Consortium, a group founded by educator/comic enthusiasts Walker Mettling and Andrew Oesch. Sessions held at library program rooms take place two afternoons per week, two hours per session. As a former art student and crafty mom, I was impressed by all facets of the classes: the obvious planning, the materials offered, the instruction of using panels for storytelling, inking and using details such as facial expression to succinctly convey emotion; there was even a healthy snack! To close the session our instructor Walker presented each child with a bound anthology of student work from both sessions, assembled with great care.

So Many Uses: Vinegar

So Many Uses: Vinegar

Vinegar easily makes my “what would you bring to a desert island’ list – the practical version anyway. At less than four dollars for a gallon jug, white distilled vinegar offers a myriad of uses that can easily replace costly and harsh pesticides and chemicals.

Vinegar can be found throughout my home whether in its original jug in the basement, the filled spray bottle in the cupboard or the dainty cruet on the kitchen counter. Even more than its low-cost, I like the idea of cleaning with something that has no warning-paragraph. There is no fear from vinegar accidently getting sprayed on foods or tooth brushes, in fact, you can spray it on foods and toothbrushes.
