Buy With Heart: Top 10 Gift Ideas for Kids and Families Support Social Enterprises

Buy With Heart is a grassroots campaign that aims to educate the community about the concept of “Social Enterprise,” introduce consumers to local businesses that utilize this model, and highlight a wide spectrum of Social Enterprise products and services. Unlike a traditional non-profit, a Social Enterprise produces competitive products and services to generate revenue (often in addition to typical fundraising such as grant-writing and capital campaigns). Just as products labeled “organic” or “eco-friendly” tell consumers how a product is sourced, the Buy With Heart symbol lets consumers know that the businesses behind their products are driven by a social purpose.

Ever wondered what’s at the bottom of your child’s backpack? Two-time Grammy award-winning artist Bill Harley did some digging, and he put the answer into song. We love Harley’s humorous spin on growing up, going to school and family life. Families can hear him sing and tell stories at a benefit concert for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank on Saturday, December 10th at the Lincoln School in Providence. Two performances are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

I have 4 tickets to give away for this concert! Please share your child’s favorite Bill Harley song or story in the comments below and I will randomly pick one winner by Friday, December 2, 2011 at Noon, EST.

The Early Bird Special

The Early Bird Special

“You coming for tacos tonight?” I text to my neighbor.

“You bet,” she texts back.

An hour later she is in our living room playing LEGOS with my kids while I spoon taco fixings into bowls and lay them out on the table.

Our dinners together began about three years ago when I was a full-time at-home parent of a toddler and a preschooler. It was right about this time of year, as we turned the clocks back and began winding our way into the long, dark nights of winter, that I felt myself on the fast track to a major mama meltdown.
