Make Comics! is run by the Providence Comics Consortium, a group founded by educator/comic enthusiasts Walker Mettling and Andrew Oesch. Sessions held at library program rooms take place two afternoons per week, two hours per session. As a former art student and crafty mom, I was impressed by all facets of the classes: the obvious planning, the materials offered, the instruction of using panels for storytelling, inking and using details such as facial expression to succinctly convey emotion; there was even a healthy snack! To close the session our instructor Walker presented each child with a bound anthology of student work from both sessions, assembled with great care.

During the Rhode Island Latino CommUNITY Celebration of Hispanic Heritage month (September 15th – October 15th) kids and families will have the chance to participate in an unusual “Treasure Hunt” as big as our state.

Instead of the usual “X” marking treasure spots, different—colored stars will mark 13 cultural destinations, from Woonsocket to Newport, on a big, fold out map, in Spanish and English. "This indoor, outdoor exploration is designed to introduce families to some of Rhode Island’s greatest treasures," said Marianne Ruggiero, the project’s coordinator.

Many people find themselves making the “big” trip to Smithfield (:15 from Providence) for apple picking season but continue heading West on Route 44 any time of year, past the A&W and Newport Creamery, and you’ll come to big-as-a-minute Greenville Common which boasts its own landmarks including Wood Items & More, a full service, independently owned craft shop. Built in 1924, the brick building with green awnings that houses the store is currently undergoing a bit of a facelift, evidenced by the scaffolding which surrounds the exterior.

Note: Wood Items & More is currently celebrating their 22 years in business by offering 20% off store wide and 30% off all floral and ribbon, through April 11. Offer excludes Scouts and classes.
