Give mom time.

One thing moms are short on is "time." Time to do read, exercise, finish a cup of coffee (while it is still hot) and time to do nothing. I know I am looking forward to some quality family time this weekend without cooking or laundry but I also look forward to my family allowing a little time to myself. Give a mom in your life an hour or more to herself this weekend.

With the Kidoinfo Evening of “Balancing Motherhood” just around the corner, I’ve been thinking a lot about this topic…eager to hear what other women will say. I find it so helpful to discuss issues with other women going through the same things (hence the birth of Rhode Island New Moms Connection); I love exchanging ideas and learning from others. Feeling so connected to this topic, I thought I’d share some ideas that I discuss with women in new moms groups…strategies that may help new moms find some balance.

I remember sitting in the required parenting class at Women & Infants Hospital when I was pregnant with my first child. The instructor talked about ways to reduce stress in our daily lives. They were common sense things, like sleep when the baby sleeps, take a hot shower, go for a walk, talk on the phone... Talk on the phone—that one seemed silly to me. How does talking on the phone reduce stress?

Elyse Major and I were recently invited to sample services at The Spa (formerly the Red Door), located in the Providence Biltmore in downtown Providence. Having the opportunity to spend the afternoon at a spa is a luxury that never seems to fit either of our budgets or timetable. But after spending an afternoon at The Spa—I had an amazing manicure and pedicure while Elyse enjoyed a massage, followed by relaxing in the quiet room with candles and magazines and ending with a delicious lunch and glass of wine at McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant—we both felt like we had gone away for the weekend, forgetting any stress or pressures of everyday life.
