We recently spent our April Vacation in Toronto attending the TIFF Kids International Film Festival.

TIFF Kids offers children and youth the opportunity to learn about cultural perspectives from around the world through the power of the moving image. More than just a day at the movies, TIFF Kids includes two public weekends for ages three and up and a two week long School Program for students in elementary schools. Featuring the best of Canadian and international cinema for children and youth, TIFF Kids offers a compelling selection of features and shorts on diverse subjects in a variety of genres and styles. It provides a rare opportunity to watch films that kids around the world are lining up to see and that in many cases may not be available again in Toronto.

It's time for Screen-Free Week (April 30-May 6, 2012), the national celebration where children, families, schools, and communities spend seven days turning off entertainment screen media and turning on life. It’s a time, as the organizers say, "to unplug and play, read, daydream, create, explore, and spend more time with family and friends."

Are you up for the challenge. Here's how it works in our family...

Aardman Studios' new movie, The Pirates! Band of Misfits based on Gideon Defoe's book, The Pirates! opens Friday, April 27th. We had a sneak peak of the film during the recent TIFF Kids International Film Festival. This stop-motion animation film combines swashbuckling comedy with science. Family-friendly with themes of loyalty and friendship mixed with adventure and British humor. Lots of fun gags without the bathroom humor, drinking, or scantily clad women.

Just wanted to let you know that Kidoinfo will be taking a break from posting this week. We are taking a road trip to the TIFF Kids International Film Festival — first time attending a festival other than our beloved Providence Children's Film Festival. Part vacation (fueling our family's film passion) and part work as we will be interviewing people in the industry and previewing films for the 2013 Providence Children's Film Festival.

While we're gone, check out...

My boys recently saw the animated film, The Lorax. They did not go in with high expectations for the film, more for the fun of seeing a movie with good friends and curious to how the beloved Dr. Seuss book with the same name would be adapted to the big screen. One of my sons liked it more than he thought (read review below), the other one not so much (review to follow).

I didn't see the film but have read the book and love the way Dr. Seuss weaves a story that combines serious issues/conflicts and the repercussions that ensue depending on what the characters choose to do beckoning the reader to think about what they might do in the same situation...

Get to know your children through film. More often than we like to admit, parents use visual media (film) as a way to spend time away from their kids. We suggest parents use film as a reason to spend time with their kids. More than just a chance to spend a few hours together, this shared experience may lead to interesting discussions and discovery about the movie-making process, life, human behavior, and the consequences our actions have on our family, friends and the world around us.
