My daughter's school recently had an outbreak of lice. We were advised to use an organic, pesticide free product called Quitnits... www.quitnits.com

You can find it at CVS but it tends to be in the specialized shampoo area, e.g. dandruff

I know that the Fairy Tales products are available on line www.fairytaleshaircare.com

I would bet Whole Foods carries some sort of equivalent. I'll check it out the next time I'm there.

Sarah, thanks for the tip about adding lavender oil to detangler, this might be an easier option.

I'd love to know where to find the preventative aromatherapy shampoo Jaci mentioned. This sounds like a Whole Foods item--what's it called?

Moms with little girls and curly top boys, it may be helpful to cut your kids' hair before using the nit comb. I had hair down to my bum as a kid and combing that mess with that teeny little comb was torturous. I know long beautiful braids are a mom's pride and joy, but it may not be worth the war. Give 'em some extra jello snacks over the next couple months and you'll be surprised how fast it grows back!

Also, adding some lavendar oil (just a drop or two to a spray bottle)to a detangler solution of water and detangler is a known deterrent to keep your kids from getting them in the first place. Many people also use tea tree oil the same way, but it can be very drying this time of the year. We use it daily all year round (it's good for bedhead too :)
Plus then your kids will have hair that smells good and is soft too.....
Also, lice really like clean hair, so washing it too often is NOT a deterrent and can make little scalps very itchy this time of year.

It's important to let people know that there are 'super lice' these days. These are lice that are resistant to most insecticides. If the lice don't go away when you use a toxic shampoo once, don't do repeat treatments as you are doing more harm than good.

The key to effective treatment with non-toxic methods is to diligently interfere with the life cycle of the lice.

Thanks for the info. Having 4 school age kids, I am always worried about this!

I was wondering if anyone has tried the all-natural lice prevention shampoos that are being marketed right now. They are intended to be used every day as a preventative measure. I heard about one called "Fairy Tales" made with a blend of citronella, rosemary, and some other natural oils and extracts. Seems like a good idea, but I'm a bit worried my kids will end up smelling like some sort of aromatherapy experiment!
Anyone given these products a try?

Eeek, the memories of having my long curly hair pulled and combed through for hours after coming home from summer camp with lice. This is one downside to letting my boys hair grow long.
