For eighty-four years, the International Institute of Rhode Island has served as a first-stop, full service immigration checkpoint and referral center providing educational, legal and social services to immigrants and refugees throughout Rhode Island. The International Institute of Rhode Island is an independent non-profit agency. Their mission is to enable all area residents, especially immigrants and refugees, to become self-reliant, invested participants in our communities.
IIRI’s Refugee Resettlement Department offers a strong helping hand to families and individuals upon their arrival to accelerate their transition to become self-sufficient and active community members. Their staff provides cultural orientation, a first apartment, food, clothing, health screening, school enrollment, skills training and employment resources.
IIRI is encouraging the Rhode Island community to assist in welcoming newly arrived refugees by volunteering or donating basic goods. Volunteer opportunities include tutoring and mentoring refugee clients, assisting IIRI staff with setting up apartments for new refugee families and other opportunities to become involved. They have an on-going need for donations of gently used furniture, household items and gift cards. By volunteering your time or donating goods, you will help a refugee family get started in their new life here in Rhode Island!
