Practically Perfect Hike: Sachuest Point

Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge has trails civilized enough for a stroller (with tires), broad rocks for climbing, water access, beautiful views…and bathrooms.

It’s right down the road from Second Beach in Middletown, between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island Sound, and has a few easy mile-plus loop-making trails to follow. But if your group’s like ours, there will not be much staying on the trail. Clambering down a steep bank leads right to irresistible giant rocks, perfect for climbing and collecting and banging together. You will even find those awesome rocks that write on other rocks.

Our group took a little rest on a raised wooden platform with a gorgeous water view. Water and Ritz crackers never tasted so fine. The modern, recently renovated visitor’s center was closed when we visited, but the very clean bathroom was accessible (hooray!) nonetheless. With its many comforts (easy, well-marked trails, bathrooms, ample free parking), this is an ideal destination for all ages. Plan to spend two hours or more, depending on your group’s endurance for walking and messing around with rocks.
