Volunteers Needed for Phase One of Old County Road School Playground Rebuild: Set for August 17 and 18
RAIN OR SHINE
I’m a big fan of playgrounds. Unfortunately the cost of new equipment is prohibitive for many schools or towns. Funds are often scraped together from a variety of sources for the cost of the equipment leaving the installation of it up to a group of committed individuals and volunteers. Having been through 2 playground builds, I can say it’s a truly rewarding experience and huge benefit to the community at large. If you have a little (or a lot of) time on August 17th or 18th, please consider helping rebuild the Old County Road School Playground at the Old County Road School in Smithfield, Rhode Island. – Anisa
On Friday August 17, 2012 at 8:00 a.m., new playground equipment will arrive at Old County Road School (OCRS) in Smithfield. Through various ongoing fundraisers and the generosity of the Esmond community at large, enough money was raised to commence a first phase of purchasing equipment to refurbish the thirty year-old worn playground.
“For years there has been talk about the need to rebuild our school playground,” says concerned OCRS parent and Playground Project committee member, Heather Byrnes. Old County Road School Principal Mrs. Laurie Sullivan, agrees, adding “How wonderful to be able to put new pieces into place over the summer break.” Sullivan continues, “When the students return later in the month, they will be very excited about being able to play at their playground rather than be told to avoid taped-off structures.”
OCRS parent and Old County Road Playground Project committee member, Jill Fontaine, needs people to help unload and begin pre-assembly of the new equipment on Friday, August 17. The following morning of August 18, a minimum of thirty people is needed for the build. “It’s all hands on deck,” says Fontaine, who has served on the committee as Chairperson since its inception in early 2011.
Playground equipment, building supplies and labor are all very expensive and for several months the Playground Project has been reaching out to parents, staff and community members for financial help but on August 17 and 18, the committee needs people power, along with equipment such as shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows. “The thought was to use every bit of hard-earned funds for playground equipment” states Fontaine. “However, as the unload and build date grow near, we are counting on and need as much physical help as we can get.”
