Toe Jam in Outer Space

[ 2 ] November 13, 2008 |

Space-Cdfront320For all you Toe Jam Puppet Band fans, you will be happy to know the band has just released a new CD, Toe Jam In Outer Space–full of familiar favorites if you have seen them locally, along with lots of original new tunes. There’s everything from rock ‘n’ roll (“Moon Rock,” “We Are the New Planets”), funk (“Space Bump,” “Ed & Edna Live on Sedna”), banjo punk (“The Bathroom Dance”), country (“Lost In Outer Space”) and even a jump blues song (“Sideways Boogie Woogie”). Guest performers, both young and old, were invited into the recording sessions to explore what they heard in the songs, and in turn they contributed to the big- and little-kid view of our ever-changing universe. The outer space theme comes from band member singer/songwriter Tom Poitras’s love of anything outer space. Tom says he actually wanted to be a guitar-playing astronaut!

As in space exploration, so too, I live in a parallel universe of music exploration,” says Tom. “I’m always listening to new and old recordings. It’s very exciting to discover new music that you absolutely love. While I wrote and recorded this record, I listened to a lot of funk (Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Sly & The Family Stone), the quirky, cartoony jazz of Raymond Scott, and to a few of my favorite songwriters of all time, the amazing Vout jazz of Slim Gaillard and the British rocker Ray Davies (The Kinks).

The Toe Jam Puppet Band was founded in 2000 when friends Tom Poitras and Vinny Lovegrove decided to combine their diverse backgrounds in music, songwriting, scenic artistry, and puppetry. The goal of the band is to offer a unique brand of interactive children’s entertainment, encouraging kids and their grown-ups to giggle, dance, and be silly together. If your kids have not discovered Toe Jam yet, there are many opportunities to see them perform live (and we recommend you do). It won’t be long before your kids turn into Toe Jam groupies, and don’t be surprised if they ask for plaid pants or Hawaiian shirts (aka Tom and Vinny style). Just keep their fingers “not up” their nose!
