Bird Banding at AudubonBirding isn’t only for adults! Bring the kids and head out on the trails with an Audubon guide for a birding excursion. Search for spring migrants, learn about one of the fastest-growing pastimes in the country, and hike the trails for some healthy outdoor exercise.

May 2, 2015    Start Birding with the Kids
Audubon Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge

The month of May is the perfect time to get outdoors, take a stroll and try out the largest growing hobby in the country – Birding. Bring some binoculars, your favorite field guide and let’s go looking for some common birds to get you started. We’ll explore the wildlife refuge and learn about using optics and spotting birds. We’ll also discuss tips on how to identify our feathered friends. This class is great for families with children aged 6 and older. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed toe shoes.

May 2, 2015    Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Free with Admission. Ages: All.

  • Admission to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center will be free on the first Saturday of every month, courtesy of a grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation.
  • Families can explore environmental exhibits representing Rhode Island’s diverse habitats, from upland meadow and cornfields to wetlands, salt marshes and the Narragansett Bay shoreline.
  • Situated on the beautiful 28-acre McIntosh Wildlife Refuge, visitors can enjoy nature trails.
    The following programs are free:
  • International Migratory Bird Day is celebrated to increase awareness about migratory birds and their habitats. Programs and admission are free thanks to the Citizens Bank Foundation.9:00 am – 5:00 pm:  Spot the Birds: Can you find all 10 birds hiding in our exhibit hall? Spot all    them all and get a prize to take home.

Enjoy a nature story with your preschooler each month. Programs include a story with a nature lesson followed by a craft. Often a live animal comes to visit! See below for dates and times. May 7 & 8: A Frog Thing by Eric Drachamn and James Muscarello

May 8, 2015    Junior Naturalists for Home-schooled Families

Join other home-schooled kids and learn about nature and science! This hour-long program will introduce participants to a different topic each class, with hands-on experiments and nature-based activities that are sure to foster a love of the natural world.  Classes are limited to 15 children, so please register early. Adult must attend with child.

Nature comes alive for children ages 3-5 in this preschool program filled with games, hikes, crafts, songs, hands-on activities and more. Come introduce your child to the wonders of nature. Children should come dressed ready to explore the great outdoors! Space is limited to 10 children, please register early.  Adults must accompany children and there are no refunds for missed classes. Younger siblings are not permitted to attend.

May 16, 2015     Letterboxing with Audubon

Bring the family for a letterboxing adventure through the wildlife refuge! An Audubon educator will teach you how to use a compass and map, then will be your guide as you follow clues through the different habitats. May 16, 2015    Birds and Breakfast
Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge
Seekonk, MA    8:00-11:30 am
What better way to celebrate the arrival of neo-tropical migrants than with a morning bird walk and breakfast at the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge! Bring the whole family and enjoy bird-banding demonstrations, meet one of Audubon’s live raptors, and take a family bird walk.  There will be crafts for the kids. Breakfast includes a delicious array of pancakes, muffins, quick breads, fruit, yogurt, juice and coffee. Come join the fun! Breakfast seatings are available for 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to take advantage of the early morning birding.

This popular program introduces children ages 18 to 36 months to the delights of nature through age-appropriate, hands-on activities.  Along with a nature lesson, activities may include nature walks, crafts, songs and stories.  This is also a wonderful opportunity to make new friends with the other children and parents. Class is limited to 12 children so please register early. Adults must accompany children and there are no refunds for missed classes.   In order to maintain an age-appropriate program we ask that older siblings not accompany the parent/child team.

Join Audubon and witness bird banding, where experts capture, band, measure and release songbirds in order to record their movements. Birds will be gently removed from tall “mist nets” set in the shrubby habitats on the grounds of the Environmental Education Center. The techniques of identifying, measuring, weighing, and banding the birds will be demonstrated before they are released. The migratory habits and life history of each captured species will be discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring a camera and binoculars. Programs are limited to 15 participants, so please register early.
