Have you heard about our take-home programs and kits?

We adapted 6 of our most popular Artists and Inventors programs into activities you can do at home, at any time!  Click here to place an order, and for more information view our Take-Home Kits page.  We are also developing a second series of 6 activities that will be available later this Fall.

In the effort to help keep staff and patrons safe; we are limiting the number of museum patrons allowed in the museum in order to help everyone keep a 6-foot distance.
Two (2) groups will be allowed in the museum at a time with the maximum size of each group being five (5) individuals and limiting the age of visitors to 6yrs and up.
A group’s visit will be limited to one (1) hour; so that we may accommodate all of our patrons.
At this time, we discourage “playdates” or meetups with people you are not regularly in contact with.

All museum visitors MUST wear a mask at all times while in the museum.

The museum is divided into three (3) zones, allowing each group of visitors safe interaction with the museum exhibits. Once your group leaves a zone, you will not be able to return to that zone, so the movement through the museum will be more directed than previous visits. Each section will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized after each use.

We will confirm your visit via email. If you do not receive an email or hear from us, or you need to cancel or reschedule, please contact Glen at gschneider@rimosa.org.

We ask that if any member of your group tests positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of your visit, that you notify RIMOSA by email or telephone so that we may properly provide our staff and patrons with timely and accurate information.

Stargazing Nights at Frosty Drew Observatory @ Frosty Drew Observatory
Apr 26 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Stargazing Nights at Frosty Drew Observatory @ Frosty Drew Observatory

Welcome to the Frosty Drew Observatory Stargazing Nights! Every Friday night (weather permitting) we open our Observatory, Science Center, Sky Theatre, and telescopes to the sky and offer free stargazing and astronomy to anybody interested in observing with us.

Tonight we will open around 7:30 pm with views of the beautiful night sky over Ninigret Park that will rock your night. Hang out with our astronomers and telescopes as we showcase the Rings of Saturn, the cratered lunar surface, the Galilean Moons of Jupiter, the polar ice caps of Mars, the phases of Venus, massive stars, speckled star clusters, vast nebulae, distant galaxies, and the best views of the Milky Way in Rhode Island. We stay open late, sometimes until dawn, and close when the skies become unobservable or everybody leaves. Be sure to subscribe to the Frosty Drew Observatory mailing list, follow us on Twitter (@FrostyDrewOBSY) or on Facebook to receive status updates about our Stargazing Nights program and more.

Now that Frosty Drew Observatory has entered its off / down season we are scaling back our operations for a few months. We will still open every Friday night, weather permitting, to host our Stargazing Nights event. Though we will not have as many telescopes or astronomers available. The big change of late is the removal of our ticket requirement, which could come back at any time we feel it is necessary. What this means is that visitors can freely visit Frosty Drew Observatory on Friday nights. What it DOESN’T mean is that everything is back to normal. We will be counting the number of visitors that enter our Courtyard and will only allow up to a specific number depending on how visitors are conducting themselves. Additionally, dome access will be a mix of self governed and astronomer managed. The same restrictions will be in place as have been for the past month and we will have signage as well as team members to help direct flow dynamics. It is very cold in the winter at Frosty Drew and due to this new model, you will be outside in the wind for extended periods of time. Inadequate preparation for your visit is NOT our fault! Our down season usually lasts until May. This is yet another trial and error process that we will adapt to and learn from. We thank you for your patience during these times.

If you are looking for that awesome astronomy thing to do or just want a night out to experience the cosmos under the darkest skies in Rhode Island, then this is your chance.

Check out our page on Visiting Frosty Drew Observatory to learn more about what to expect at the Observatory and better help you prepare for your visit.

Please note that we do not allow any white lights on our campus from dusk – dawn. This is to ensure an equally awesome view of the night sky for all and to allow for the use of light sensitive astronomical equipment. Learn more about why we have this requirement in The Red Light District

It is cold at Frosty Drew Observatory during the winter. Visitors will be completely exposed to the harsh winter environment while standing on frozen ground. Dressing properly is REQUIRED to attend! Lean how the Frosty Drew Astronomers dress for working overnight on the Frosty Drew campus during the winter. Read it! Follow it!

We will update this event listing on the day of the event. The update will describe our plans for the night and what to expect regarding weather and astronomical sights.
