Raising Courageous, Independent Kids: Break the Worry Cycle with Lynn Lyons @ Jewish Community Center of Rhode Island
Dec 5 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

An evening speaker series for parents and caregivers. Untreated anxiety in children is one of the top predictors of depression in adolescence and young adulthood. The good news? Research proves that teaching children certain cognitive and social skills makes a big difference in preventing the development of these struggles.Lynn Lyons describes the most common anxiety-enhancing patterns – including reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and poor problem solving — and then introduces concrete skills that change both the child and adults’ ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving. The goal? Helping kids move toward autonomy and flexibility throughout the life cycle. Come hear from Lynn and meet AISNE member schools at these complimentary evening programs!

Modern Mentor: Reimagining Mentorship in Education Talk & Book Signing with Author Dr. Matthew X. Joseph @ Barrington Books Garden City
Feb 8 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Join us for a talk & book signing with Dr. Matthew X. Joseph for his new book Modern Mentor: Reimagining Mentorship in Education.
Many teachers think mentoring means checking a box, but its potential in education is far more inspiring. When done right, mentoring can uplift new teachers, invigorate aspiring leaders, enhance the skills of sitting leaders, and ultimately impact students now and for years to come. Education mentorship experts Matthew X. Joseph and Suzy Brooks show how being a Modern Mentor is a mindset, not just a program.
This Lead Forward Series book shares practical, timely stories and strategies for mentors, mentees, and those who lead mentorship programs. The authors answer questions such as: How can I connect with my mentor or my mentee in a way that benefits us both? How can a mentoring program convey an inspiring purpose, so teacher leaders want to join? How can I encourage peer-to-peer mentoring at my school?-How can I grow as a leader through mentoring? It’s time to be a Modern Mentor
The book Modern Mentor: Reimagining Mentorship in Education brings you the stories and strategies you need to invigorate teacher leaders and impact students through mentorship.Dr. Matthew X. Joseph has collected incredible insights on how best to support teaching and learning, and his work has led to nationally published articles and opportunities to speak at multiple state and national events. He has been a school and district leader in many capacities in public education over his twenty-five years in the field, with experiences such as being the director of digital learning and innovation, an elementary school principal, a classroom teacher, and a district professional development specialist. Matt currently serves as the director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in Leicester Public Schools. He earned a master’s degree in special education and administration and has his Ed.D. in educational leadership from Boston College. Matt holds licenses in teaching, school administration, and MA superintendent.

Gordon School Continues Antiracist Practice Conversations in 2021 @ ZOOM provided by Gordon School
Jan 12 @ 6:30 pm
Gordon School Continues Antiracist Practice Conversations in 2021 @ ZOOM provided by Gordon School

Gordon’s ongoing series of parent dialogues on antiracist education continues into the new year with Race in the USA: The Remix, Side A, led by Luke Anderson, eighth grade humanities teacher. Race in the USA will be a two-part discussion that uses lessons on Black experience in America, drawn from Gordon’s eighth grade curriculum, to help parents think about how to talk with children about race. The second part will be Tuesday, March 2nd; both are free and open to the public.

The parent dialogues for the 2020-2021 school year center around the topic of what it means to build an antiracist community: as a school, as care-givers, as young people. Dialogues this fall included a discussion of Stamped, by Ibram X. Kendhi and Jason Reynolds, and an evening with Dr Howard Stevenson.

For decades, Gordon has used a multicultural curriculum and supported a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and families. Developing empathy and taking action are keys to a more just world, and these lessons, which begin as early as nursery school, provide a foundation for Gordon students to live out the school’s mission on campus and beyond.

When:
Tuesday, January 12, 2021, 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 31, 2021, 6:30 p.m.

Where:
Zoom link at www.gordonschool.org/race

The event is free and open to the public.

About Gordon School
The Gordon School, in East Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 1910 as the state’s only non-public coeducational school. Since then, Gordon has evolved into a progressive institution that offers students hands-on, real-world academic experiences that have applications far beyond the classroom. Learning takes place among a diverse population of students and teachers who reflect the many cultures within Rhode Island’s community, ensuring that each student comes to truly appreciate the value of multiple perspectives. Educating children from nursery school through eighth grade, Gordon’s goal is to graduate intellectual leaders, joyful learners, and empathic young people who will make a positive impact on the world.
