Gordon’s ongoing series of parent dialogues on antiracist education continues into the new year with Race in the USA: The Remix, Side A, led by Luke Anderson, eighth grade humanities teacher. Race in the USA will be a two-part discussion that uses lessons on Black experience in America, drawn from Gordon’s eighth grade curriculum, to help parents think about how to talk with children about race. The second part will be Tuesday, March 2nd; both are free and open to the public.
The parent dialogues for the 2020-2021 school year center around the topic of what it means to build an antiracist community: as a school, as care-givers, as young people. Dialogues this fall included a discussion of Stamped, by Ibram X. Kendhi and Jason Reynolds, and an evening with Dr Howard Stevenson.
For decades, Gordon has used a multicultural curriculum and supported a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and families. Developing empathy and taking action are keys to a more just world, and these lessons, which begin as early as nursery school, provide a foundation for Gordon students to live out the school’s mission on campus and beyond.
When:
Tuesday, January 12, 2021, 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 31, 2021, 6:30 p.m.
Where:

The event is free and open to the public.
About Gordon School
The Gordon School, in East Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 1910 as the state’s only non-public coeducational school. Since then, Gordon has evolved into a progressive institution that offers students hands-on, real-world academic experiences that have applications far beyond the classroom. Learning takes place among a diverse population of students and teachers who reflect the many cultures within Rhode Island’s community, ensuring that each student comes to truly appreciate the value of multiple perspectives. Educating children from nursery school through eighth grade, Gordon’s goal is to graduate intellectual leaders, joyful learners, and empathic young people who will make a positive impact on the world. The Newport String Project is excited to present the second virtual concert in our new series Hidden Newport, showcasing some of Newport’s most beautiful and unusual locations through virtual chamber music concerts. This performance, premiering on February 7th at 2pm on YouTube, spotlights the Belmont Chapel, situated in the heart of the Island Cemetery. While its Gothic profile is a familiar sight to many, the interior is still relatively unknown. The Newport String Quartet brings to life the intricate mosaics and stained-glass art with music by Caroline Shaw and Andrea Tarrodi.
