Family Matters: Last-Minute School Vacation Ideas

Looking for things to do during school vacation week? Who isn’t? Here are 3 go-to’s that are cheap and free, plus 25 more ideas.

Kido Tip 1. Look for signs of spring.
Head outdoors with your kids to explore nature. If you live in the city, take RIPTA to a more rural area for a walk and exploration. If you’re country mice, come to Roger Williams Park or any of Providence’s urban parks and look for bulbs, blooms, and buds. Bring a notebook to record your findings with words or drawings. (Free)

Kido Tip 2. Pay it forward.
Do something unexpected and nice. Make cookies or muffins for your neighbor, local librarian, or firefighters (delivery to a firehouse can be a major highlight for kids). If you live near a nursing home, you can bake for residents, but call ahead to get advice on dietary restrictions. (Cheap)

Kido Tip 3. Clean up your local park or playground.
Bring a bag and gloves and make a game out of picking up trash. Count how many pieces you collect. (Free)
