Family Matters: Snowy Scavenger Hunts & More

With the kidos coming off the holiday high, what creative things can a family do to keep sanity in the home?

Kido Tip 1. Get outside. It’s possible you might need to recuperate from a cookie or gift binge (or both!) this weekend, and will be in need of a breath of fresh air. Bundle up and take the kids outside for an adventure. Snow PlayTurn a walk around the block or trek to the park into a scavenger hunt by searching for things found in nature; birds, sticks, pine cones, and red berries or not; bakery, red car, mailbox. Make up questions on the fly or plan ahead and prepare a scavenger hunt sheet complete with questions and check boxes.

Kido Tip 2. Back to routine.

For many of us, this weekend will be the last before our children return to school. After you’ve cleaned the house of holiday decorations and stocked the fridge with healthy treats for the upcoming school week, plan some family time to play cards or watch old Charlie Chaplin films. To help ease back into your regular routine– tuck the kids into bed early Sunday evening–and curl up alongside them to read a good book together.

Kido Tip 3. Make a date.

Some of us welcome the return to a more normal, structured life. Others dread the school/work schedule and a world without candy canes. Either way, this is a great weekend to organize the upcoming week around a coffee, running, or movie date with a good friend for the upcoming week. Start the year off with treating yourself right!

Every week on GoLocalProv I share tips on how families can make the most of their family time – including helpful hints that make parenting easier and connecting you to great local happenings.
