Free parenting workshop about raising courageous, independent kids

The Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE) is sponsoring a parenting workshop called Raising Courageous, Independent Kids: Break the Worry Cycle with Lynn Lyons.

The workshop takes place at 6:30 pm on December 5, 2019, at the Jewish Community Center, 401 Elmgrove Avenue, Providence. It is free and you can register here.

According to AISNE, untreated anxiety in children is one of the top predictors of depression in adolescence and young adulthood. The good news they say? Research proves that teaching children certain cognitive and social skills makes a big difference in preventing the development of these struggles.

Lynn Lyons describes the most common anxiety-enhancing patterns – including reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and poor problem solving — and then introduces concrete skills that change both the child and adults’ ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving. The goal? Helping kids move toward autonomy and flexibility throughout the life cycle.
