Fruity Food

I love a screaming orange. Even though you see them everywhere, we are not at all tired of the wacky and wonderful creations by Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers made from fruits and vegetables. (Titles include: How Are You Peeling? Foods With Moods, Food Play, Fast Food, and others.) We’ve tried making the banana airplane and the swiss chard ocean and the broccoli poodle. But today we made strawberry guys with lentil eyes—it’s addictive. There’s something about the lumpiness of the berries that gives each one a recognizable, genuinely human expression. And the only materials you need are lentils or black eyed peas, berries, and a butter knife for slicing a mouth. This project is good for kids who can concentrate as well as those with short attention spans—the results are nearly instantaneous.
