Grocery News: Berry Picking

Strawberryby Katy Killilea

Need an excuse to eat biscuits and whipped cream? Fresh strawberries are plentiful and the U-pick-it season has begun. We left Four Town Farm on George Street in Seekonk (a hop, skip and jump from Target) with eight pounds of beautiful berries after just twenty minutes of picking in the sun. Kids are great berry pickers—they are so low to the ground. A canopied tractor ride takes you from the cashier/basket/welcome tent to a field full of ripe berries. And when you get your fill of sweet berries, English peas—the kind you shell—are also ready to pick.

Find a U-pick farm near you by visiting Farm Fresh Rhode Island or Pick your Own. Strawberry season won’t last long, and if you miss it, raspberry season’s around the corner in July.

Four Town Farm has been around for about 70 years. It also has a farm stand full of fresh fruits and vegetables and delicious baked goods. Ask the cashier for a bucket and scissors, and you can cut your own flowers for a modest fee. Four Town Farm, 90 George St., Seekonk, MA. 508-336-5587.
