The Gordon School was founded in 1910 by a female pediatrician for her son Gordon. Today, Gordon continues to be the choice for families who seek a coeducational environment that challenges intellects and imaginations. The nursery through eighth grade structure allows a focus on the crucial early years. Academics, arts, music and athletics are grounded in real life applications. Gordon eighth graders benefit from an exceptional secondary school placement process. The school’s longtime commitment to being a racially diverse institution extends throughout the student body, faculty, Board of Trustees and administration. Gordon has been recognized as a national leader in multicultural education, sending faculty to present at conferences nationwide and hosting a Middle School Institute that draws teachers from across the United States.

  1. Cindy Elder says:

My husband and I are both products of the public school system, and we always thought we’d raise our daughters that way, as well. Our girls, now 10 and 11 years old, have experienced both public school (in one of RI’s top school systems) and private school, at the Gordon School in East Providence. For our children, the Gordon School clearly is the right choice. Why?

During our children’s four years at Gordon, they have consistently expressed true joyfulness with regard to the large and small moments of their school days. My daughters are good students, but rather shy, and yet at Gordon they have come out of their shells and blossomed in many ways, due to the safe, encouraging atmosphere which recognizes individual strengths and challenges. Their teachers come to know them with a depth that is simply not possible, even for the best teacher, in a classroom of 25 or more children. Gordon’s small class size of 16 or less means that every child gets one-on-one with the teacher, and no child can fly under the radar. In many instances, my children have been encouraged to pursue a particular talent or area of curiousity, even if they were the only one in the class interested.

As a K-8 school, Gordon offers a safe, nurturing environment for young students to begin their academic exploration. It is magical to see the way kindergarteners look up with awe to third and fourth graders, or to see the seriousness with which 8th graders take their job as role models for younger students.

As a parent, I selfishly enjoy the involvement I am allowed to have with my children’s education. In early childhood and lower school, particularly, I have enjoyed volunteering in the classroom or on field trips. I’ve also gotten to know many parents through participating in projects organized by the parent association. We have a lot of families here with two working parents, so there is no expectation that everyone should volunteer, but there is certainly a welcoming attitude at the school which makes parents feel like a valuable part of the process. Even in the middle school, I feel completely comfortable knocking on the door of my daughter’s teacher and chatting with him about our concerns or ideas.

In this changing world, I truly appreciate Gordon’s focus on some of the more intangible elements of education, as well — ideas about how we treat each other, simple respect, and social justice.

If you’re looking for a school that will keep the flame of excitement alive in your young learners, Gordon is definitely it. My husband and I both feel it is perhaps the greatest gift, beyond our love and close-knit family, that we can give our children. We hope they carry that love of learning with them throughout their lives.
