Do you want to be a mentor to a new mom? OR do you need someone to look
after YOU for a change?
Families First Rhode Island is a non- profit organization that matches
“mentor moms” to moms of newborns who may be at risk for or are already
experiencing Postpartum Depression (PPD), and to women who are in the late
stages of pregnancy and are experiencing depression. At the core of our
program are our dedicated and compassionate mentor moms who provide
non-judgmental care and quality time to their matched mom. Since its
inception in January 2008, Families First has evaluated seventy-five moms,
sixty of whom have been successfully matched with a volunteer.
The “mentor mom” meets with her assigned mom for approximately one hour per
week for the baby’s first year. This relationship epitomizes the term,
“mothering the mother” or as Families First calls it, “Moms Helping Moms.”
The program also provides “Mom’s Gatherings” which offer an expanded support
system, parenting tools, and the skills to find resources in the community.
Free taxi service is provided to women without transportation so they are
able to attend the gatherings. To be a volunteer mom, or a mom who may need
support, go to www.familiesfirstri.org or contact: Sally Harrison, Clinical
Program Director at (401)383-9933 or sally@familiesfirstri.org

Commitment to helping area youth develop physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. It was a pioneer in recognizing that quality child care helps keep working families together. Well before government programs and most other human service organizations became involved in child care, the Army built its first day care center in the early 1940’s on the East Side of Providence.
