The Avenue Concept, Rhode Island’s leading public art organization, brings Brooklyn-based sculptor Matthias Neumann to Providence to create a site-specific sculptural work entitled “Basics #46.” The sculpture is the latest iteration of a series of public interventions called “Basics,” which began as part of a larger museum installation at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Romania. The series has since had a substantial number of iterations throughout the US, including works in Baltimore, Chicago, San Antonio and Atlanta.
The public is welcome to observe the artist at work and ask questions as he creates the sculpture over the course of two days using only a saw and some other small power tools. He believes the on-site installation is a valuable public engagement process.
Where: The corner of Fountain and Empire Streets in Downtown Providence.
When: Friday, May 21 and Saturday, May 22. The bulk of the work is expected to be completed on Friday.
