While I tend to save and revere magazines, I have no problem placing the latest round-up of catalogs into the recycling bin. I also have no issues with cutting catalogs apart, which brings us to this very simple project with the complex name.
This project can be done using any colors or combinations you or your child prefer, but assigning the task of seeking out images of only one color (hence the “monochromatic”) seems to kick the interest level up a notch. Note that while I chose green for the project example, selecting a color like apricot, lavender or silver can really bring stunning results.
Materials
- Clean, dry bottle
- Scissors
- Catalogs
- Decoupage medium (such as Mod Podge or watered-down school glue)
- Foam brush
- Wax paper or newspaper to protect your work surface
How-to
- Choose a color
- Leaf through catalogs, tearing out images in your selected color
- I like to keep cut pieces relatively small (about 1” x 1”) and will even cut a single clipping into multiple scraps
- Apply glue to the back of each clipping
- Place and gently press your glued clippings onto the surface of the bottle. For best results, completely cover the bottle’s surface until little or no glass peaks through.
- Brush a light coat of decoupage medium all over the bottle, smoothing clippings as needed, and allow to dry.
Enjoy your new vase!
Left with extra clippings? Continue the crafty fun by making a matching collage on a piece of cardboard, a can, tissue box, or anything else you can think of.
Now you’re catalogs are ready for the recycling bin.

I love the monochromatic guideline. I am now thinking of jar shapes I want to use. Thinking the peanut butter jar will be perfect in blue shades.
