I adore apple season and luckily, so do my children. The fun outdoor activity of picking our own apples followed by making something with the bounty and then eating what we make is so much sweeter when shared.

Caramelized Onion Tarts With Apples (recipe)
I have modified this recipe using tart (like macoun) apples rather than sweet ones, 3/4 red onions, goat cheese instead of sour cream, finishing with walnuts on top. I add balsamic vinegar while caramelizing the onions.
